Home National Sports First Aid course
This course gives a nationally recognised qualification in Sports First Aid in the UK and has been validated by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. It is aimed at anyone who is working in and around sport, whether you are a pitch-side physio, a player, an undergraduate physio and sports science student, a concerned parent or if you are over sixteen and looking for a comprehensive first aid qualification.
Over two days, particular attention is given to applying the information on sport specific scenarios and incorporates real life examples and experiences from our tutors, all of whom work in elite sport and have been to Olympic, World and Commonwealth Games.
The NSFA qualification meets the criteria for the Bronze level award on the ACPSM (Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine) CPD pathway.
The course has been delivered to the English Institute of Sport, Great Britain Judo, Scottish Rugby, Universities, and many Sports National Governing Bodies. For groups, the course can be tailored to be specific for any sport or particular interest.

Course outline Course Outline
The course is delivered over two days, with particular attention given throughout the course to applying the information to sports specific scenarios. The course incorporates actual real life examples and experiences. Discussion and questions are encouraged throughout the two days, and inclusion of the tutor's and students' own experiences adds to the learning experience.
Introduction to the course aims and objectives
Section 1 - The Sports First Aider in Action
Legal role and responsibilities of a First Aider, first aid cover for sporting events, pre-event planning, first aid facilities and telephoning for help.
Section 2 - Crisis Management
Incident assessment (DRSABC), basic life support (resuscitation as per the Interventions Resuscitation Council UK 2006 Guidelines. The unconscious casualty (AVPU), the recovery position, vomiting, choking and heart attack.
Section 3 - Injuries in Sport
First Aiders role at a sports event, Head Injuries, Facial Injuries, Spinal Injuries (log roll practice), Bleeding Injuries, Limb Injuries (fractures, dislocations, soft tissue) Shock and Burns.
Section 4 - Medical Conditions in Sport
Asthma, Diabetes, Seizures and epilepsy, Hypothermia and hyperthermia, Allergies, meningitis infection and bites, Practical Sessions. Included are workshops on basic life support, 1 and 2 rescuer scenarios use of pocket and face masks, Choking, Recovery Position and Log Rolling. Extensive practice with real life emergency scenarios.
Assessment
Final assessment includes a multiple choice exam and a practical scenario based assessment that includes resuscitation skills. On completing the course and passing the assessment a certificate from the NSFA is awarded and now lasts for three years.

Formally lead physiotherapist with Great Britain Judo, travelling with them on the World Cup circuit and throughout their preparation camps and at the Beijing 2008 Olympic games. Neil's been to two Olympic Games, two Commonwealth and several European Championships. Neil has worked for the English, Scottish and Austrailian Institutes of Sport, and at an International level with Athletics, Hockey, Triathlon, Skiing, Swimming, Rugby, Rowing, and Boxing.
Ian Gatt
Ian is lead physiotherapist with Great Britain Boxing and travels with them to events all over the World. He works for the English Institute of Sport and is an Associate Lecturer in Physiotherapy at Sheffield Hallam University. Ian has been to the Athens Olympic Games and worked with elite atheletes in Volleyball, Netball, Athletics, Gymnastics, Cycling and Football.

Paul has worked in elite sport, including physiotherapist to former rally world champion the late Colin Mc Rae, Formula one. He has travelled with various teams extensively; British bob sleigh, British skiing, the British Judo squad, British Tae Kwando team and England La Crosse. He has also worked for the British Olympic Association as a senior Physiotherapist at the Olympic medical Institute rehabilitating injured elite athletes as part of a MDT.

Kevin is a former Great Britain and Scottish International Rower. As a Sports Science Consultanant and High Performance Strength & Conditioning Coach at the Glasgow School of Sport, Kevin is responsible for the aerobic conditioning of the five key sports of swimming, hockey, gymnastics, athletics and badminton. Kevin is also responsible for blood lactate testing for the National Rowing Academy athletes, and fitness advisor to the University of Stirling Rowing Team, in addition to consultant rowing coach for the National Rowing Academy.

Joy has established a number of physiotherapy and sport injury clinics in London. In addition to working with elite teams, her most recent stint as Head Physiotherapist for London Irish and with England RFU, she continues to work with many of London leading consultants providing specialised screening, prehab, rehab and treatment for sports and other musculoskeletal problems.
